In most cases, yes. Whangarei District Council requires a geotechnical assessment as part of building consent applications for new construction, particularly where there are identified ground hazards, steep slopes, soft soils or proximity to waterways. Even on sites not flagged by council, a geotechnical report provides the foundation design parameters your structural engineer needs. Whangarei's geology is varied. The Whangarei Basin has areas of soft alluvial soils and peat in low-lying areas requiring careful foundation consideration. Hillside sites across Tikipunga, Kamo, Onerahi and the Heads area typically have residual clay soils of moderate to good bearing capacity, with slope stability a consideration on steeper sections. Whangarei Heads volcanic terrain introduces basaltic materials. Coastal sites at Bream Bay, Ruakaka and One Tree Point can have sandy soils and elevated groundwater. Our geotechnical team has direct experience across all of these areas.
